The foundation: race, ethnicity, and language (REAL) data

You are determined to build a foundation for health equity. And, according to the American Hospital Association, collecting race, ethnicity, and language data is fundamental to resolving disparities in care. We have the training you need to ensure every patient has a race, ethnicity, and language assignment. And when you are ready, we can help you with other demographic data too.

Initiate implicit or unconscious bias interruption education

Human beings are amazing and yet we are imperfect. We feel most comfortable around people who we perceive to be like us. We function using shortcuts our brains create to move us efficiently through our days. Unfortunately, both factors lead to implicit bias also known as unconscious bias. This is one of your most significant challenges as a health equity champion. We have education that will lead your teams to become curious about bias and they will be driven to interrupt it.

Reports and data transparency

There comes a time in your health equity journey when building internal support becomes a necessity. You know that visualizing the data is essential for making your case. Tools such as benchmark reports, dashboards, and regional snapshots provide the transparency you need to motivate collective action within your organization. We have tools and services to help you build a culture that embraces health equity.

Gender Identity Data Collection: Consultation and Customized Training

While most healthcare organizations collect gender data, many are not equipped with the subject knowledge or education to expand their data collection to include gender identity. Our in-house and faculty experts provide consultation on: (1) Two-step gender identity data process utilizing patient self-reporting methods. (2) Field testing and tailoring intake questions. (3) For more advanced organizations, advice on the collection of LGB+ data, including best practice categories. When a data collection program has been finalized, MIH will customize its base training to incorporate training elements specific to your organization. The entire process will expedite your gender identity and LGB+ data collection program.

LGBTQ+ Across the Spectrum

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Education (eLearning Module Format)

This eLearning series is designed to help a variety of healthcare professionals recognize and apply key sexual orientation and gender identity terms, expand conceptual understanding, challenge misconceptions, and improve communication with LGBT+ patients and families.

Each eLearning module covers multiple facets of sexual orientation and gender identity, including sex assigned at birth, culture, and gender expression. The content includes eye-opening statistics and insights about disparities facing the LGBT+ community and illustrates

how small changes can create big improvements. Learners practice multiple scenarios to develop concrete skills that equip them to respond to a variety of common situations, promoting a welcoming and affirming environment for LGBT+ patients, families, and staff.

CoLabs for Resolving Disparities and Impacting Structural Racism

More Inclusive Healthcare works with 8-10 clients per year to advance health equity within their organizations. Client projects center on serious challenges such as identifying and resolving disparities in diabetes care or blood pressure control. In 2021, projects have been initiated that center on: (1) disparities in maternal health; and (2) aligning teams on the structural racism and implicit bias that prevents diverse and vulnerable populations from living their best lives. We would like advance global healthcare in these areas and more.

Build a culture that embraces health equity with reports that build executive support and make disparities transparent.
Health Equity Best Practice Assessments

This assessment begins with a survey of 30-40 questions regarding various health equity activities and practices within your organization. Questions are asked about your:

  • Data collection activities;
  • Use of data to identify and resolve disparities in care, experiences or access;
  • Collection social determinants of health data;
  • Implicit bias and cultural responsiveness educational practices; and
  • Data transparency through quality, strategy and other dashboard reports

Survey responses are converted to a dashboard showing how your answers line up with best practices. The organization is rated as beginning, intermediary, or advanced on the path to health equity. Recommendations for next steps are a feature of the report.

Health Equity Dashboards

More Inclusive Healthcare offers a variety of dashboard reports utilizing your organization’s raw data and PHI blinded registries. Visualizations include:


  • REAL data collection;
  • Stratification of discharge data revealing useful findings such as vulnerability among patient populations and patient access challenges; and
  • Stratification of diabetes and hypertension quality measures.


Customized reports are also available. Reports may focus on maternal morbidity/mortality data, readmissions, and other measures where disparities are commonly found.

Service Area Vulnerability Scans

This report utilizes public data to identify vulnerabilities across service areas. Factors such as, race and ethnicity, percentages of uninsured and Medicaid, percentage of individuals below the poverty level, and the prevalence of chronic conditions are just a few of the statistics included. Reports can be cross referenced with your organizations internal data to paint a picture of regional health and need. The information may be used as a basis for strategically initiating collective impact projects, to seek funding to support community-based interventions, or to guide the work of health equity teams and initiatives.
